When you drag and hold items over a folder in Finder, you’ll notice it takes a moment for the folder to open. This trail of folders is interactive you can drag and drop items onto one of those folders, or double-click a folder to jump to it. When moving files around, it can be helpful to reveal Finder’s Path Bar (View > Show Path Bar). The next time you invoke Siri using its Dock icon, menu bar icon or by pressing Cmd+Spacebar, it’ll expect you to type your command or question instead.īrowse drives, find files and move things around in quick time To do this, you’ll need to change a setting in System Preferences’ Accessibility pane: select Siri in the left-hand column, then check the box next to Enable Type to Siri. In cafés, offices and libraries, to name a few scenarios, it’s more discreet to type commands and questions to Siri rather than speak them out loud. Press Return and Siri will reprocess your command. If Siri misinterprets what you’ve said, just click the words it thought you said and edit them using your keyboard to correct it. Spotlight respects operator precedence (multiplication before addition, say), and you can use brackets to override this. You don’t have to open macOS’s Calculator app to perform quick calculations - simply type in Spotlight instead. (To reset the position, click and hold Spotlight’s menu bar icon).Īfter typing in Spotlight, quickly move down the results without reaching for a mouse or trackpad by pressing Cmd+Down Arrow to jump a category at a time. If Spotlight’s results are getting in the way of what you’re comparing them with, move them to a convenient location by dragging from the magnifying glass in the window. Your Mac’s Spotlight search engine (opened by pressing Cmd+Spacebar) is a great way to find your files and launch apps. Siri, added in macOS Sierra, has a few tricks up its sleeve, too.Įnter “define:” (without quotes) as your first term in Spotlight and then type a word, the first result will be from the Mac’s dictionary. Make the Mac‘s search engine and personal assistant work for you If you use this a lot, consider dragging the ‘Cursor size’ slider right to make the pointer larger all the time. Lost track of the pointer? Remedy this in System Preferences > Accessibility > Display: turn on ‘Shake mouse pointer to locate.’ Shake the pointer and it will temporarily grow in size. Those panes remain accessible in the View menu, or by clicking and holding the button that shows a grid of dots. This hides incoming items until the next day or you repeat the action.įinding it hard to pick out the pane you need in System Preferences? If you only use a few, choose View > Customize and clear the checkboxes next to panes you use rarely. The quickest way to shut them out is to hold Opt and click Notification Center’s icon (top right), so it becomes dimmed. Your workspace is your space, even if those pesky notifications that pop up make you believe otherwise. This is usually done in an app’s View menu if the icon's easy to tell apart, choose Customize Toolbar and hide text labels. If you can memorize key combos or menu items’ locations, hiding toolbars can free up room for what you’re working on.

Window furniture shrinks use an app’s zoom feature to keep things readable. If your Mac has a Retina display, choose a higher ‘looks like’ resolution from System Preferences’ Displays pane. There’s an equivalent hidden option for the menu bar in System Preferences > General. The Dock will reveal itself again when the pointer hits the edge where it lives.
